Email brings a Gmail or Outlook mailbox into the suite. You connect an account once, pick which folders to keep offline, and then read, star, archive, move, reply and compose from any Ensō device. Your mail stays in your provider’s mailbox — Ensō is a window onto it, not a replacement for it.
Connecting an account
Section titled “Connecting an account”Open Email settings and choose Connect an account — Gmail or Outlook. Your browser opens the provider’s own sign-in and consent page; Ensō never sees your password. When you return, the account appears with its folders and the first messages start arriving within a minute. On the desktop app the sign-in happens in your system browser and the account shows up once it syncs.
An account shows Connected or Needs attention. If a provider’s authorisation lapses, the account flips to Needs attention (and the list shows Needs reconnecting — see Settings); click Reconnect to sign in again. Disconnect removes the account’s folders and locally stored mail from all your devices and changes nothing in the provider mailbox.
Offline and online-only folders
Section titled “Offline and online-only folders”In Email settings, each folder has an Offline checkbox and a Keep count.
- Offline folders are downloaded and synced to every device. By default the 1000 most recent messages are kept; set Keep to another number, or
0to keep everything. - Folders left online-only are browsed live from the provider when you open them and need a connection.
Moving a message into an offline folder downloads it; moving one out of offline into an online-only folder removes the local copies everywhere (the mail itself stays at the provider). Turning a folder from offline to online-only asks for confirmation first.
Reading mail
Section titled “Reading mail”Pick a folder in the sidebar to see its message list; Load more fetches older mail. Messages stored on this device show a Stored offline marker. Open a message to read it; remote images are blocked until you click Load images.
Per message you can Star / Unstar, Archive, Delete, or Move to another folder. Actions are queued and applied to the provider, so they work offline and catch up when you’re back online. Gmail labels are shown as folders, with each message appearing under one primary label.
Composing
Section titled “Composing”New message opens the composer with To, Cc, Bcc, and Subject fields and a plain-text body. Reply, Reply all, and Forward prefill it from the open message. Drafts save as you type and can be reopened with Edit draft or discarded with Delete draft. Sending goes through your provider, so messages appear in its Sent folder as usual. Attachments can be viewed from incoming mail but can’t yet be added to outgoing messages.
What syncs, and what doesn’t
Section titled “What syncs, and what doesn’t”| Synced to your devices | Offline folders’ messages (headers, snippet, body), stars, folder placement, drafts |
| Fetched on demand | Online-only folders, attachment contents |
| Never stored by Ensō | Your provider password; sign-in tokens are kept encrypted on the server only |
| Not in your data export | Email. It’s owned by your provider — export it from Gmail or Outlook directly. See Your data. |
| Not searched | Email isn’t included in Ensō’s global search |
Limits to know
Section titled “Limits to know”- One primary folder per Gmail message even when it has several labels.
- No attachments on outgoing mail, and bodies are plain text.
- Mail cannot be placed in a vault.
- Email is available only when your Ensō server has mail enabled; otherwise the app shows Checking server configuration… and then explains mail is off.
